I wanted to tell him not to trouble himself because I’d be reborn, but I couldn’t find the words amid the tumble of thoughts in my confused and fading mind. I settled for dying quietly while he worked, my wavering gaze fixed on the robed and hooded figure standing in the shadows, watching with the cold detachment of a dead man.
